Pre-operative physiotherapy for patients undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery

Preparing patients for arthroscopic knee surgery is a crucial aspect of their overall treatment journey. As a physiotherapist, your role in the pre-operative phase is vital to optimize patient outcomes and enhance post-operative rehabilitation. This guide provides an overview of the key considerations and recommendations for evaluating and preparing patients for arthroscopic knee surgery with us.

Patient Assessment:

You will have received or established the patient's medical history, including any relevant knee conditions, previous surgeries, allergies, and underlying health issues. Please notify us if there are any risk factors that may impact the surgical and recovery process. It will be very helpful for us if you communicate range of motion, strength, stability, to us and any associated factors, such as muscle imbalances or joint abnormalities.

Diagnostic Imaging:

In our referral to you, we will include relevant information on X-rays and MRI scans as we think its crucial for you to determine and understand the specific nature and extent of the knee injury or condition.

Patient Education and Counseling

Please educate the patient about the arthroscopic knee surgery, including the goals, expected outcomes, potential risks, and the rehabilitation process. We will also do this from a surgical perspective but a physiotherapist has different specific insight that needs to be shared. Please highlight again to follow our detailed instructions regarding fasting requirements, medication management (e.g., discontinuation of blood-thinning medications), and any necessary pre-operative tests or consultations.

Please discuss the anticipated post-operative course, including pain management, weight-bearing status, use of assistive devices, and the timeline for physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

Pre-operative Physiotherapy Interventions:

It will be great, if you can design an individualized exercise program to optimize knee function, improve range of motion, strengthen surrounding muscles, and enhance overall fitness. This may include exercises for quadriceps, hamstrings, calf muscles, and core stabilization. If applicable, perform gentle joint mobilizations to improve knee mobility and prepare the joint for surgery. Utilize appropriate modalities, such as ice or heat therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), or manual therapy techniques to manage pain and inflammation.

Collaborative Approach:

We value and appreciate open lines of communication with you to discuss the patient's pre-operative status, share evaluation findings, and address any concerns or considerations. Please also let us know if you collaborate with other healthcare professionals involved in the patient's care, such as anesthesiologists, nurses, and surgical team members, to ensure comprehensive pre-operative preparation and a smooth transition from pre-operative to post-operative care.

Effective pre-operative evaluation and preparation for patients undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery sets the stage for successful surgical outcomes and optimized rehabilitation. By conducting thorough assessments, providing education, implementing targeted interventions, and collaborating with the surgical team, physiotherapists play a crucial role in maximizing patient outcomes and facilitating a smooth transition into the post-operative phase.
