Dr Arakkal who was the fellow in our lower limb fellowship programme collaborated with our infectious disease specialists, microbiologists and the bone infection unit (Prof Laubscher) to provide a great knowledge on infectious of bone and joints and their treatment at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. The study evaluated bacteria causing bone and joint infections in surgeries. He looked at which antibiotics could work best against these infections and found that Staphylococcus aureus was the most common bacteria, and some antibiotic combinations were really good at fighting it. We can now use this information to pick the right antibiotics for bone and joint infections until we have access to a tissue sample which we can assess in the laboratory.
